Becoming a Top Candidate

Happy November!

How’s your job search going?

If you've been getting interviews but you aren’t closing the deal, listen closely.

You have to become a 1% candidate to get the offer!

If you want your dream role, you have to stand out from the competition, it’s as simple as that!

“But how do I become a 1% candidate?”

Make sure every single touchpoint you have with a company makes them feel like you are a high-value candidate.

During the interview, it's important to show you are genuinely excited about the role and company.

You can do this by doing research, knowing what the company does, and having specific reasons this opportunity excites you.

Why them, why now, why this role? Make sure your interview narrative answers these questions clearly.

The other thing that the top 1% of candidates do is express excitement BETWEEN interviews. It makes you rise to the top of the candidate list.

You have the opportunity to stand out by communicating your eagerness for the role between interviews, but many people fail to do this and become less compelling candidates.

Quick reminder: Companies want to hire people who want to work for them specifically. It's your job to convey that to them.

The best way to show you're excited between interviews is by sending a compelling thank you email right after every job interview.

Every email exchange you have with the hiring team should always be polite and friendly. Believe it or not, this goes a long way and can add or subtract from your candidacy.

A thank you email will help you stand out because, surprisingly, not everyone does this step. 🤨

Send one even if you've talked to the person before.

"But what should I write in my thank you email?”

Here is a template you can use:

Hi Francie,

Thanks again for taking the time to interview me today. I appreciate you telling me more about the UX Researcher role at Gyfted.

What you mentioned about X, Y and Z definitely resonates with my background and what I'm looking for in a new role.

I'm looking forward to hearing back about the next steps and meeting the rest of the team. If I can provide any additional information please let me know.

Thanks!
Stephanie

Overall always aim to be brief, kind, and clear. Send it as soon as you get off the call and re-express your interest and excitement for the role.

"But won't I seem too eager if I send a thank you email right away?"

My friend, there’s no such thing as being too eager when it comes to job interviews

I can’t stress it enough, always express excitement early, and often, it's one of the keys to acing any interview.

Be genuine, and be early. It will make a difference. It will help you land the job you deserve!

It’s time to crush your goals and land that role you’re after.

Bonus points: Also send a LinkedIn connection request after the interview since it's the most relevant time to connect. Never miss those networking opportunities. Building your brand and reach will only help solidify your status as a 1% candidate.
