Succeeding in Your First 90 Days

Before you start your new job, I just want to tell you the work ain't over yet. 👀

"Say what?"

You got the job, but don't breathe too easy the game isn't over, it's just beginning in fact.

When my clients get offers my parting advice to them is always to outline their first 90 days for success.

Here is a high-level framework you can use.

First 30 days: Observe

  • Absorb everything you can - Watch and learn.

  • Set up coffee chats and meet your team.

Days 30 - 60 days: Clarification

  • Ask all of the questions - Find the answers you need to succeed.

  • Determine the influencers - Hint: it's not always people with the high titles.

Days 60 - 90: Implementation

  • Show that you've listened and you can execute - Time to get a 'win'.

  • Aim to be a top performer moving forward.


Your first 90 days are instrumental in gaining traction, success, and creating relationships that may impact your success at this company and in future career moves. Make a plan and execute.

Here's what to think about when starting a new role.

  • Be Early. Submit your projects early and aim to get wins early in your tenure, this will help you stand out as a top performer.

  • Be Accurate. Make sure your work is complete and accurate, make it your best work every time.

  • Be Great. This goes without saying but strive to be the best on your team. Take initiative, become indispensable, and build career leverage.

  • Be Like-able. When the right people like you they'll vouch for you when you are not in the room. Be mindful of this, as it can add or subtract to your success.

  • Be Curious. Ask questions and show you are thinking about how to solve problems. One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is not speaking up early or enough and assuming their work will speak for itself. It won't.

The goal (even after the first 90 days) is to be great at your job and build strong relationships. But know that this isn't just on you, your new company should also do its part to help you transition into your new role.

They should have an established on-boarding process that prepares you for your role and responsibilities and sets you up with everything you need to succeed.

More importantly, remember, the company gave you an offer for a reason, so don't doubt your greatness.

Go on and show them how magical you are!
