Is your resume too long?
What's the ☕️ this week?
I saw a few resumes this past week that ran too long, with old roles and bullets that described duties instead of results.
Aim for 1 single page. Only go to 2 pages if you have 15+ years of experience.
Remember your resume is a highlight reel. You won't have space to put everything you've ever done, and neither should you.
Once you trim it down, the impressive stuff can show up.
Most of us bury our best work under too much context. The reader has seconds to scan and get a first impression.
So this week, take the longest thing in your job search and cut it by a third.
Your resume, your "tell me about yourself," or that behavioral story that takes 5 minutes to finish.
Quick guide:
- Resume: 1-2 pages max, cut roles that don't support where you're going
- Bullets: action verb + task + impact + a number
- Stories: 3 sentences max per STAR point
And keep your pipeline moving while you edit. One big interview is not a reason to slow down outreach.
